This past week, I learned a hard lesson about taking care of yourself.

I damaged my left eye due to having severe eye strain.

As a publisher, I spend a lot of time on my computer reviewing book covers, manuscripts, and going through a lot of email correspondence with clients.

I started to have severe pain in my eye last Tuesday and it got worse throughout the week.

It got to the point where I could barely keep my left eye open as it was very sensitive to the light.

Fortunately, after a few days of staying off the computer, resting (not easy for someone who is ADHD and likes to be active), and limiting television, my eye is finally healing.

I did learn a few long-term lessons from the issue.

First was to reduce the brightness on my laptops and iPhone. I reduced the brightness to 20 percent and now I can work on my laptops again without pain.

The second lesson I realized was how bright the white light is on all our computers. This is especially apparent when using email, Microsoft Word, and websites like ESPN. Reducing the brightness has helped tremendously with those areas and I am keeping the brightness at that new level going forward.

Third lesson was to rest no matter what else is going on. Sometimes you have to rest whether you like it or not for your health.

The fourth lesson was that sunglasses are AWESOME! I wore a big pair of sunglasses over my prescription glasses and they were a great help with the light.

I also wore them for a Facebook live for Ray Brehm’s online event and was able to do the interview, while minimizing the light and looking cool.

By the way, today is the last day of Ray’s online event.

Over the past several days, he has offered all sessions for free as part of an encore presentation and tonight he will be taking them down.
